After working as an architect in several offices
and observing the rapid rate at which projects became
obsolete due to their inability to respond to changes
in program, James J. Moorhead, Jr. founded Studio
for the Study of Kinetic Architecture (SSK Architecture).
By acknowledging the inevitability of programmatic change
during the design process and deploying a kinetic architectural
vocabulary that can respond to change, we seek to create
buildings, interiors, structures and landscapes in which
motion (or ideas about change and motion) are integral
to the design process and/or the resulting architecture,
that is, Adaptable Spaces and Evolutionary Buildings.
We believe that a kinetic architecture is the necessary
architecture for a world transforming at a frenetic
pace. Kinetic design can be expressed in various
ways, referring to structural or spatial characteristics,
aspects of form, or elements of ambiance, such as light.
The movement of the various components may be literal
or virtual. While we strive to be innovative in
our exploration of new materials and construction techniques,
we also believe that there is great potential for advancement
and innovation in architecture by exploring new uses
for materials and techniques currently developed for
other industries and disciplines.
Ultimately we pride ourselves on creating design solutions
that respond to our clients' current programmatic requirements
yet also anticipate their changing needs.
We hope that our goal of creating Adaptable Spaces and
Evolutionary Buildings will lead to the realization
of projects in which the idea of sustainable design
embraces not only materials and construction techniques
but also the ability to accommodate programmatic change
over time and for a variety of uses.
